ASTM A790 Duplex Steel UNS S31803 Seamless Pipe Manufacturer
We are Xintongda Special Steel (XTD), a China-based experienced manufacturer and global supplier of Duplex Steel S31803 seamless pipes. Commonly known as Alloy 2205 or SAF 2205, the duplex steel S31803 is a strong dual-phase (austenitic & ferritic) alloy consisting of 21-23% chromium, 4.5-6.5% nickel, 2.5-3.5% molybdenum, around 2% manganese, 0.08-0.20% nitrogen, and other elements in the remaining proportions. Our alloy 2205 seamless pipe complies fully with the ASTM A790 standard. The S31803 performs very well in high-pressure and many corrosive environments. It is also highly resistant to crevice corrosion, pitting, and stress corrosion cracking, with the PREN value being 32-35. These reasons make the duplex pipe useful for oil & gas, chemical processing, marine, and other applications.
At Xintongda, we have a history of delivering in-stock products within a week and production orders in 15-60 days. We have been serving China and many other countries for 4 decades, and are multiple international certified.

What is the Manufacturing Process for Duplex S31803 Seamless Pipe?
Being the largest steel pipe factory, we make our duplex stainless steel S31803 seamless pipes by heating and piercing a solid round bar into a hollow shell. This shell is then sent for hot working and cold-drawing in order to get the precise dimensions. Later, we carry out solution annealing and rapid quenching to maintain its austenite-ferrite phase. At the end, we straighten the pipe and send it for testing. To learn more about the manufacturing process, visit this page.
What are the Key Features of DSS ASTM A790 UNS S31803 Pipe?
There are 4 main features of the duplex stainless steel S31803 pipe: high tensile strength, dual-phase microstructure, high corrosion resistance, and resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC).
- High Tensile Strength: The alloy 2205 gets its high tensile strength mainly due to the inclusion of ferrite. Ferrite increases strength, austenite improves toughness, and when these two combine, the alloy gains good strength. Also, the nitrogen content (0.08-0.20%) increases its strength.
- Dual-Phase Microstructure: DSS S31803 pipe has a dual-phase microstructure (50% ferrite, 50% austenite), which makes it stronger than fully austenitic steels, tougher than fully ferrite steels, and highly resistant to stress-related corrosion.
- High Corrosion Resistance: The chromium present in the alloy creates a passive oxide layer, the molybdenum increases resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, and the nitrogen provides resistance to chloride environments. The combination of these 3 elements results in a higher overall corrosion resistance than the standard 304 and 316 pipes.
- Resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC): The ferrite material in this alloy makes it highly resistant to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking.
What are the Equivalent Materials for Duplex Steel S31803?
The Duplex steel S31803 pipe has different equivalent designations for different regions and standard systems. The standard equivalent designation is UNS S31803. The alloy 2205 is also recognised by its Werkstoff number as DIN 1.4462.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is Duplex Stainless Steel S31803 Pipe?Duplex Steel S31803, also called alloy 2205/ SAF 2205, is a dual-phase (austenitic & ferritic) microstructure alloy made of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, nitrogen, manganese, and other elements. It is one of the popular grades of duplex stainless steel seamless pipes.
-
How does Duplex S31803 behave compared to 316L stainless steel for piping?Duplex S31803 provides better corrosion resistance (including pitting, crevice corrosion and SCC) and higher strength when compared to 316L stainless steel. The main reason is that the 316L is a fully austenitic stainless steel, while the Duplex S31803 has a dual-phase microstructure containing 50% austenite and 50% ferrite.
-
What temperature range can S31803 pipes handle?S31803 pipes can handle the temperature range from -50 °C to 300 °C.
