The 904L pipe consists of nickel (23-28%), chromium (19-23%), molybdenum (4-5%), copper (1.0-2.0%), controlled silicon content (typically ≤1.0%), and other elements like manganese and carbon in the remaining proportions. It is known for its superior corrosion resistance in harsh chemical environments. ASTM A312 TP904L pipe is strong enough to withstand sulfuric acid due to its copper addition, while its high nickel and molybdenum content enhances resistance to chloride-containing environments, which makes it better than the 316L seamless pipe in aggressive corrosive conditions. Since the 904L alloy has low carbon, the pipe is easily weldable and is resistant to intergranular corrosion. SS Seamless 904L pipe’s ability to remain stable at elevated temperatures (up to 450 °C for corrosion resistance) makes it suitable for high temperature applications like heat exchangers, oil & gas, etc. Our stainless steel pipes adhere to ASTM A312 guidelines. SS 904L Seamless Pipe Manufacturing Process
Our 904L Seamless Stainless Steel Pipe is made by heating a solid billet of that alloy, then piercing and extruding to form a hollow shell. The shell then goes through hot working, followed by cold drawing/ cold rolling for the required dimensions. Next, we perform solution annealing to enhance corrosion resistance and optimise the alloy's austenitic structure. Before the pipe is sent for testing, acid pickling and final straightening are done to get a clean surface and dimensional accuracy. What are the Key Features of 904L Stainless Steel Pipe?
There are 6 properties of stainless steel 904L pipe that make it different from the others. These are corrosion resistance, high strength & toughness, low carbon content, non-magnetic, good weldability & formability, and high alloy content.
- Corrosion Resistance: SS 904L pipe has excellent resistance to pitting, corrosion, and crevice corrosion cracking because of its high nickel-chromium-molybdenum content.
- High Strength & Toughness: 904L pipe gets its strength from its highly alloyed austenitic structure. Due to this, it can easily withstand elevated temperatures and moderate pressure conditions.
- Low Carbon Content ( ≤0.02): Since the amount of carbon in this alloy is low, the pipe remains safe from sensitisation and intergranular corrosion.
- Non-Magnetic: 904L seamless pipe is generally non-magnetic due to its fully austenitic crystal structure resulting from its high nickel content. Slight paramagnetism may occur after cold working, but it does not affect performance.
- Good Weldability & Formability: The pipe’s unique chemical composition, especially the low carbon content, makes it more weldable and ductile.
- High Alloy Content: SS 904L has high amounts of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and copper, due to which it forms a stable passive layer when exposed to harsh conditions. This results in excellent resistance to chlorides, acids, pitting, and crevice corrosion cracking.
